Cat Chatter

February 28, 2010

A few weeks ago, I heard a strange noise outside.  It sounded to me like a duck.  Although there is a canal that runs through the back yard, I don’t remember ever seeing any ducks in it.  So it prompted me to take a look outside.  To my amazement, it wasn’t a duck at all, but my mother’s cat Frankie.

He was looking at something on the dock while making this noise, and sure enough, there was a pelican hanging out.  Chattering is an involuntary reaction to something a cat wants, but can’t get to.  So next time your cat is making strange noises, take a look outside.  Chances are you will see something that your cat wants (maybe for dinner).

Clarification Regarding Credit Reports and Job Scams

February 27, 2010

Recently, I wrote two posts, one about job scams, and the other about the importance of credit reports while looking for a job.

In the post about job scams, one of the things the scammer was requesting was a copy of your credit report.  Under no circumstances should you provide that to a potential employer.  First of all, the scammer said that the report was going to be used to check your job history.  That is not the purpose of a credit report.  Second, if a potential employer needs your credit report, they should get it themselves.  n order to do that, they will need your social security number, and I would be cautious about giving that out.  The best time and place to do so, is when you are sitting in their office on a first interview.  This way, you can be verify that the person is who they say they are.

As for your credit report itself, keep it in a safe place.  There is a lot of personal information on these reports including your social security number, a list of all the loans you have and a list of all the credit cards you have and the status.  This report is something that you don’t want to get into the wrong hands.

I feel very strongly on this topic, and can’t stress enough on this topic about the importance of keeping your financial information safe.  Scams will continue to happen as long as the scammer is successful.  Don’t be a victim.

Cats and Water Don’t Mix

February 27, 2010

A large number of animals love water, including some domestic animals.  But cats typically are not amongst the water-loving domestic.  So why is that?

The domestic cat descended from the desert.  Not much water there.  They really don’t have a need to be in water, therefore they prefer to stay away.  Another reason is that water can change their natural odor.  Something cat’s don’t particularly care to happen.  Then there is the grooming.  After all, your cat spends a lot of time cleaning themselves, why ruin the hair do with a dip in the pool.

This isn’t to say that cats can’t swim.  Actually, they can, and do so very well.  But I would think twice about tossing your cat in the pool on a hot summer day.  Especially if you value your life.   That is unless you have a Turkish Van.   This breed of cat loves the water.  Then again, this breed developed near Lake Van, hence the name.

Why Cats Love People Who Hate Them

February 26, 2010

Have you ever noticed that your cat always seems to go to the one person who doesn’t really like cats?  Have you ever wondered why.  It pretty simple really.  Cats find eye contact to be rude.  So there you are with your friends, and your cat walks in.  Everyone turns their attention to the cat except the one person who doesn’t like cats.  Your cat is thinking, “Hey, these people are so rude,  look at them stare at me.  Wait a minute, there’s a polite person.  I think I’ll hang out with him.”  And there you go.  Your cat makes a bee-line for the one person who doesn’t want her near him.

Kind of funny if you think about it.

So next time you have a cat hating friend at your house, tell him to stare at your cat, and she will leave him alone.  I on the other hand think it’s poetic justice that your cat should bother him.  That will teach him not to like cats.

Cats vs. Dogs, Which is More Popular

February 25, 2010

So which is the most popular pet, Cats or Dogs?  surprisingly, Cats out number dogs.  In the dogs defense, one of the reasons is because people who own cats tend to have more than one cat in the household, while most people who own dogs, find one dog more than enough.

Centuries ago, dogs were far more popular.  People put their dogs to work.  Hunting, herding and other chores that helped their owners get through life.  As years went on, people found a place for cats.  In most cases, cats were brought onto the farm to help kill rodents and other small animals that threatened to ruin the grain supply or crops.   It was at this time, that people realized that cats made great pets.

Today, with the rise of apartment and condo living, cats have become even more popular due to the small amount of living space and the ever-increasing work demands put upon people.  Cats became the pet of choice since they don’t need as much room as dogs, nor do they need to go out to do their business.  As for exercise, both cats and dogs need a lot of it.  But the nice thing about cats is they can get their exercise in the home, while dogs need a larger space, usually outside, to run around.

So the answer is cats are the more popular pet right now.

Is Credit Ratings Important When Looking For a Job

February 24, 2010

We’ve all seen the commercials for things like “FreeCreditReport.com”. and I have to admit that I love the commercials for it.  Most of these websites, and commercials mention that good credit can affect your ability of getting a job.  But just how true is that.  Well, I just want to let you know that I have friends who were offered a job, and didn’t get because of their credit score.  So what do you do about it.  Go to the websites you see advertised on T.V.?   You could, but I know I personally Wouldn’t.

First of all, I want to stress th importance of finding out about your credit report, It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a job or not.  You need the details to determine if someone has compromised you credit.  It could happen without you knowing.  Some people don’t find out until years later when it’s too late.  So yes, you are entitled to a free annual credit report each year, and you should do it.

So, how do you know if the online company you’re dealing with is legit?  That’s very important, and I have to tell you, I don’t trust any of them, even though a lot of them are legit.  The reason why I don’t trust any is because I don’t know what to look for in a fake website.  So my solution is to go directly to the Federal Trade Commission.  You can pull up their website via FTC.gov or simply type in Federal Trade Commission. (make sure you look at the addresses before clicking.  It might not be the FTC, so be careful about that).

The FTC has a section where you can get a free credit report.  They give you a list of three reporting agencies to choose from.  Equifax, Experian, and Transunion.  Each of these reports you can get for free annually.  One of the things I like to do is pick a different one every four months.  this way, I basically get three free credit reports a year.  By going via the Federal Trade Commission, at least you have some piece of mind that you are going to a reliable source, not a fake website.  It’s worth the extra key strokes.

Each of these three websites that the FTC will direct you to will try to get you to subscribe to them.  Just say no.  Why pay for something that you don’t have to.  If you want the added security of having a company automatically check now and then, go for it, but it really isn’t needed as long as you keep on top of things.  All three will also ask you for some detailed information.  They will also ask you questions to verify that you are the person who you claim to be.  An example is, (and this I got from last time I checked)  What is the name of the company who holds your car loan.  You will be given a choice of three or four companies.  You need to pick the correct one.  If not, you will not be able to get your latest credit report.

If you decide to print your report (which I recommend as long as you keep it in a safe place), you will be given an option if you want your social security number shown in full.  Always say no.  You know what it is, the last four digits is fine.  Print it yes, because it will most likely be several pages.  Once printed, look at each line.  See what credit cards, loans, etc. are listed and make sure you know about each one.

Keep a copy in your files, and use them to cross check the next credit report you order.  Remember, you can get each of the three for free each year.  Choose one every four months.

What about your credit score?  Well, you wont see that on these reports.  But the reports will show if you were late or missed a payment on something.  These are things that will affect your credit score.  As long as the information on the credit reports is correct, you should be fine.  If not you need to report any discrepancies, and each website will tell you how.

One more thing I would like to mention.  The reason that they call it a credit report is because it all has to do with credit.  I have a friend who thinks she has wonderful credit, and her credit score is probably perfect because she always pays cash for everything and doesn’t even have a credit card or loan.  Boy is she wrong.  She’s probably got the lowest credit score then someone who has missed a few payments.  I tried to explain to her why, but she just doesn’t want to listen, but I will explain it to you.

What is a credit score?  It’s a score given to you based on your history of paying back your credit (loans).  If you don’t have any loans, don’t have any credit cards, never borrowed any money, then chances are you have a low credit score.  why, you have no credit, and have no credit history.  My advice to people in this situation is to get a credit card, use it once in a while and pay it back in full each month so you don’t have to deal with paying interest, and you have a credit history.

By the way, don’t think that because you have a perfect credit rating you will automatically get a loan when needed.  My credit is near perfect, but I was turned down for a home equity loan last year.  I have to admit, I would have been mad if I got the loan, because I was unemployed and couldn’t really afford it, that’s what put the economy in the trouble we are in now, and I didn’t need the loan, I just wanted it in case of emergency.  Someone actually looked at my monthly expenses and monthly income, and that was the deciding factor.  This is something that came about in the last two years thanks to government intervention.

There are a lot of people who feel that the government needs to step back from the new regulations they have imposed on the financial industry.  I, on the other hand feel that the government should impose more regulations on the financial industry.  (No, I’m not a Democrat, but neither am I a Republican).  I am a banker, who has spent 23 years working on Wall Street, and couldn’t believe what I was seeing.  But this post really has nothing to do with that.  If you are interested in hearing my views on the topic, let me know, and I’ll give you more.

What it all comes down to is there is a need for everyone to check out their credit report.  You can do so for free, but be wise.  Just use the Federal Trade Commission Website to get to likes on the three credit report websites available.  It’s the safest way that I can think of.  And yes, It’s important that you do so.

Job Hunt

February 24, 2010

The job hunt continues.  As some of you may know, I do my job hunt every day.  What I’ve noticed is a decrease of jobs I’m qualified for, and an increase of  jobs I don’t mind doing, but, when I send my resume and cover letter, I’m told thank you , but no thank you.  just not worded that way.  Unemployment has hit so many industries that it is nearly impossible to change industries.  Not impossible, but nearly.  Once again, I received a nicely worded e-mail message informing me that the company has found people better qualified for a possition then me.  Well, sure.  I never worked in that industry, and there are probably hundreds of thousand that have and are now unemployeed.

Times are hard everyone.  I just want to wish you all luck, and we will all get through this.  We just need time for the economy to improve.  In the mean time, take up volunteer work, it could turn into a job.  Also, think about working part time.  This is another way to turn a hard to get by into a full time job.

Keep a smile on your face, and know that, although it looks like you’ll never work again, that’s not the case.  Be creative, and think of interesting ways to find employment.  When you least expect it, it will happen.

Once again, good luck to every one!!!!!

Spam, and I Don’t Mean the Stuff In The Can

February 23, 2010

One of the things that drives me nuts about writing a blog or having a website is the number of messages people try to post that is nothing more then spam.  WordPress has filters that try to determine is a message to a post is spam or not, but they can’t always weed out what is true spam and what is not.

The way I tell is if the comment is not related the the article I post, or if it is very general, like “I like the way you write.”  Yeah, okay, I don’t write as well as I could or should, so don’t give me that.  If you are going to post a comment to my website, and you don’t see it, well, I guess that’s because what you’ve said has nothing to contribute to the article that would benefit those that read my posts.  Some have slipped by me, but I’m going to get real hard on comments going forward.

Speak your mind, it doesn’t matter if I agree with what you have to say or not, it will be posted.  But it won’t be posted if it has nothing to do with the article.  It also won’t be posted if there is bad language involved.  (that hasn’t happened yet, but who knows, one day it might.)

For you spammer’s out there, knock it off.  I want this site to be informative, and the people who read what I have to say to learn from it.

Thank you.

Mugsy The Dog Has Nine Lives

February 22, 2010

I’ve mentioned my parent’s dog, Mugsy, a few times.  He’s fifteen years old, (will be 16 in may), and he’s still going strong.  Growing up, we always had dogs.  But like most pets, there comes a time when you have to say the final good bye.  It’s a very difficult thing to do.  Let’s face it, they are a member of your family.  So, on Saturday morning, we all got up knowing that Mugsy’s appointment to the doctor, would probably be his last.

It all started on Friday morning when he was acting strange.  He didn’t want to eat, he wasn’t moving around, and he was digging hole and throwing up.  We offered him cheese, and he didn’t want it.  This was not good.  Hoping he would feel better by the afternoon, we all went to work thinking about him all day.  My mother had already made an appointment with the vet who could see him at 8:30, Saturday morning.  But by the time we got home, we discovered he was in worse condition.

He hadn’t done a pee or poo all day, which is a warning sign that something is very serious.   A dog could usually last about 24 hours before his system starts to shut down from the toxins in his urine that is not being released.  He also dug a hole, and collapse head first in the hole.  This was now an emergency.

Since his doctor was closed for the rest of the day, my parents decided to take him to the local animal hospital which as emergency pet care all night.  It was decided that if the vet at the pet care place suggested to put him to sleep, they would wait until morning when Mugsy could see his own vet.  Sure enough, the emergency place told my parents that his system was shutting down, and he was going into kidney failure.

My parents brought him home, and had a sleepless night, knowing that he would probably be put down in the morning.  although my mother would have wanted him to die peacefully in his sleep, she also didn’t want him to suffer.  I reminded her that he was old, and he had a very good life.  He traveled with my parents a lot, and yes, he was spoiled, but isn’t that what you do with your pets?  But no matter how hard you try to justify to yourself that it’s okay to let him go, it’s still hard.

The next morning, my mother found Mugsy in the closet sleeping.  She told me between tears, that he loves to sleep in the closet.  Isn’t it strange that even in his condition, he’s still doing things that are a habit to him.  We laughed and cried about it.  We were now on the count down to Mugsy’s life.  My mother suggested to my step father to walk him.  Maybe he’d go to the bathroom.  It was nothing more than a desperate attempt to avoid the inevitable.  Tom said okay, and put the leash on him.  Mugsy slowly walked out the door.  “don’t get your hopes up.”  I informed my mother.

They were gone for about 15 minutes, which was normal.  Mugsy doesn’t walk as fast as he use to, and we spent the time waiting, crying but also cooping with the inevitable.  When Tom returned, we both jumped on him.  ”Well?”

“He did one poo, and about 8 pees.”  He informed us.  Not only that but he already looked a hell of a lot better.  We were all shocked, and now crying out of joy.  He might just make it after all.

By the time he got to the vet, he was his old self.  The vet did a series of test, and checked him out completely.   His heart was still strong, and with the exception of a few things that can be contributed to old age, he was healthy.  He put him on some antibiotics, and had my mother change his diet to ground beef and rice, and that was it.  And to think, the emergency vet wanted my parents to put him to sleep only the night before.

Mugsy’s Nine Lives

Mugsy hasn’t had nine lives yet, but the count is getting higher.  This isn’t the first time a vet wanted to put him to sleep.  The first time was about 8 years ago when he was about 7 years old.

Life one:  Mugsy had gotten into the garbage and ate an entire chicken carcus.  When my parents discovered what he was doing, they rushed him to the vet.  The vet took X-rays and discovered serious internal damage.  The dog was definitely in pain at that point, and the vet didn’t think he would survive.  The suggestion was to put him down.  Although the doctor admitted there was hope, there wasn’t much, and it would take a long time, and cost a ton.  My parents told him to do what he had to do.  Money would not factor into their decision.  As long as there was hope, they would do what they could for him.  Three weeks later, Mugsy came home, almost as good as new.  As for the disposal of any kind of bones, all garbages where child (dog) proofed.  There was no way he or any other animal would ever get any type of bone again.

Life two:  Three years later, when Mugsy was ten, He was acting a little strange.  He refused to eat, and wouldn’t go to the bathroom (sound familiar?)  At the time, my parents didn’t know that this was something to be concerned about.  They just thought that it would pass.  But by the beginning of the second day, Mugsy was crying, and in definite pain.  My parents took him to the vet.   It didn’t look good.  The vet determined that he had kidney stones, which could be operated on, however, since it had been more than 24 hours since he last urinated, his kidneys were probably beyond repair.  His suggestion was to put Mugsy down.   My parents once again said, do what you can for him.  Needless to say, Mugsy survived with no permanent damage to his kidneys.

Life Three:  Now that my parents know that the lack of urination is serious, they actually count the number of times he pees each day.  Yes folks, I’m serious, and you would too if you nearly lost your beloved pet because of something like that.  So when it happened again two years later, they took immediate action.  The only problem was it was Sunday, and his vet was closed.  So my parent’s took Mugsy to the emergency pet care place, and had them drain Mugsy’s blader to give him time to get to the vet.  The next day, they took him to his vet.  It was the same problem.  kidney stones.  The doctor could operate, however, due to his age, Mugsy was 12 at that point, he felt it might be better to put him to sleep because he might not survive the surgery and the surgery was costly.  Well, my parents knew just how costly it was, but hey, do it any way.  So the doctor did.  Although it took longer for him to heal after the surgery he survived.

Life four:  Life four is what I described in the beginning of the post.  Although he didn’t need surgery this time, it’s interesting how the emergency pet care place told my parents he was going  into kidney failure and should be put to sleep.  Yet this time, he healed himself.  He was fine by the nest morning and all his doctor had to do what check him out.  As mentioned he’s still healthy for a 15 year old dog.  He may not be able to see or hear well, but his heart is strong, and he’s not in any pain, and at that age, isn’t that all that matters?

Okay, so this is just four lives, not nine.  But who knows what will happen next week, next month or next year.  I’m not fooling myself, I realize that he’s been very lucky, and my parents are the reason for that.  To them, Mugsy is their son.  That’s the way it is with most people and there pets, and that’s the way it should be as far as I’m concerned.  That being said, they do for Mugsy what they would do for their son.  As for me, as I notice yet another fresh pee in the hall way that I need to clean up because I didn’t get him outside in time, I smile and say to myself, “God, I hate cleaning this up, but it’s my own fault for not letting him out in time.  At least we still have Mugsy.”

Sweetie the Cat Play Nurse

February 22, 2010

A few weeks ago, I had a bad cold.  Although it wasn’t the flu, I was miserable, and pretty much stayed in bed for nearly a week before I started to feel better.  Sweetie the cat, stayed by my side as she usually does when I don’t feel good.  Her normal procedure is to get under the blanket with me, something she only does when I don’t feel well, and kiss me on the forehead, you know stuff like that.  She also remains quiet, and isn’t as demanding as she usually is.  Some how she knows that I don’t feel well, and she’s there to take care of me.

But this all begs to wonder, could my little girl catch my cold?  Perhaps it’s not safe for her to be that close to me when I’m sick.  Well, the answer to that is don’t worry.  Although cats can get a cold, they can’t catch a cold from a human.  The viruses we get are not interested in cats.  The same holds true if the cat has the cold, people wont catch it.

So if you have a special kitty who likes to play nurse when you don’t feel well, let her.  She won’t catch your cold.  I promise.
